Actual Good Blame

In Hip Hop on February 24, 2013 at 9:59 pm

I remember a loonnnnnngggggg time ago (99?) , my boy Greg and I were debating who was better Lil Wayne or Turk. I was adamant  that it was Turk, he thought I fooling and stayed trying to get me to listen to Wayne and I was like “Nah F**k that.”

Time would obviously tell that he was right.  Wayne would go from child star ridiculed by Masta Ace, to genera crossing megastar, who had one of the best runs (2005-2006) ever, as far as Hip Hop is concerned.

Turk on the other hand would run afoul of Slim and Baby and then the law, copping to attempted murder of an police officer and eventually ended up doing 9 years in prison.

While Lil Wayne is proving 30 is the new midlife crisis, Turk, who was released from prison  last October and is trying to resume his music career.

After watching  this horrible DJ Holiday freestyle in which he looked like he was still was rocking the gear he got bagged in, I had little faith that he would make a good song during his remaining time on this planet.

Again I was wrong.

“Blame It On The System” is haunting song tied together by a sinister piano loop, that expounds on the ills of our legal system and beyond. Yes, while not sonically, given those delivering the message of injustice, it does have a “100 Years” feel to it, i.e, a people who brazenly speak about criminal acts, complaining about being punished for them.

That cognitive annoyance aside, “Blame It On The System” is a good song, that I recommend that you listen to.

Oh, what? You want to know why I was speaking in plural terms in regards to the song? That would be because it contains a verse from crazy, coke snorting, scene stealing verse guy of the moment, Gunplay, which is always a good thing.

To the police we’re a perfect target
Their main goal is trying to take us out the fucking market
Make ya convict, now you’re starving
Can’t get a job picking cotton cause of your charges
