RANDOM ILL: A Tribe Called Quest “God Lives Through”

In Random ILL on May 21, 2014 at 1:09 pm

“Aries is my sign. I know I can rhyme.”

^^^^^ (Shameless “I’m an Aries too.” plug)

“God Lives Through” is the crescendo of what I believe to be, the best (3-4 song) closing of any Hip Hop album ever made.

Maybe I’ll write about that one day.

He was like Big Boi before people knew Big Boi existed in said respect.

Morning Music: UGK “Cocaine In The Back of the Ride”

I could write a dissertation on all of the reasons why I love this song.

For now I’ll just keep things simple.

“Cocaine in the Back of the Ride” epitomizes the brashness that would go on to make Pimp C one of Hip Hop’s all-time great personalities.

His opening salvo, gifted us with the legendary “South Texas muthafucka, that’s where I stay!” line, while concurrently being utterly amazing due to the fact it was written and performed by a 17 year old.

To this day, I contend, that on Nas’s “Live At The Barbecue” is the only verse more impressively spat by a someone of that age. (B.G is the king under 18 Hip Hop albums)

From “I got a job for the city bitch, I’m shoveling snow!” to explaining how he will get fellatio by any means necessary, The Pimp’s star quality abounds all over this classic track.

While this early UGK work came before Bun B developed what has become one of the best deliveries Hip Hop has ever seen, he still rides this southern flavored Boom Bap rap tune with excellent dexterity.

This is quite the nice, if illegal in real life, way to start the morning.

I STILL can’t understand how nobody has sampled the piano at the end of this song yet.

This was a great way to wake up today.

(A moment of silence for the fish.)
